We provide integrated support for children and their families, to create a safe environment for growth, connection, and effectiveness.
Our practice supports families and children ages 2 years and older.
Any child or family can benefit from the support Kindred Family Practice offers.
Ensuring excellent and effective care is our mission. Therefore, we manage caseloads in a way to make sure every family is able to be seen regularly and in a timely manner. We will develop a progress plan that is unique to each child/family’s needs. As such, sessions could be twice a week or once a month or something in between!
Typically, we like to meet with new child/families once a week for the first month to build rapport and consistency with your child. After this time, we do a check-in session with the family to ensure we are working on the right thing, determine progress and make any adjustments needed.
We try to structure each, and every session based on the needs of that specific child/family. As such, there is not a typical session. There are a few things however, that are generally the same.
The first session after the initial consultation is almost always done with Jana and the child alone, unless the child or parent requests otherwise. Although subsequent sessions are usually 1:1 with the child, we rarely will deter a parent from coming into the session if requested and only if it is productive to the learning process.
Kindred Family Practice may request to meet with parents every 4-5 sessions to ensure everyone is on the same page and address any issues or concerns that arise. Parents may request a meeting at any time they feel the need to. Additionally, Kindred Family Practice does not identify one singular person as the “problem” and therefore will connect with the whole FAMILY in most instances. Be prepared to engage in the learning process alongside your child! Often, there will be something for you and your child to work on together throughout the week such as journaling, coping skills, or a specific activity/exercise.
Coming in once a week will provide a foundation from which to work, and in order to change or improve upon things, you will need to do some work outside of the scheduled sessions.
The initial consultation is from 1 to 2 hours. Regular sessions are 60 minutes in length.
As far as the duration of the learning process, this is again something that is specific to each child/family. You may choose to taper off from sessions once there has been a period of time where the identified goal is being met, however, you may continue as long as desired.
If you choose to stop sessions yet find need for support in the future, you are more than welcome to increase frequency or come back for a booster or refresher.
Absolutely! Working within this supportive environment, it is fear that may prove especially effective in breaking through old patterns and revealing important insights. By the way, no prior knowledge of horses and/or horsemanship is necessary.
We have a covered area and the inside of the barn, which enables us to work year-round, no matter what the weather. We don’t work in severe or dangerous weather conditions. We may postpone and reschedule your session in these circumstances. We will contact you the day before or the day of if we see something concerning enough to warrant cancellation.
Many people who are allergic to horses have participated in Equine Facilitated Learning. We encourage you to bring the medication required, including an EpiPen, if appropriate, to manage the condition. In many cases we can work around the allergy (Perhaps at some distance from the horses? Perhaps in another way entirely?) so that your child has a complete and exciting experience with minimal impact on them!
Dress comfortably, and dress to fit the weather. Due to our cool and sometimes unpredictable wet climate, we advise dressing in layers with a waterproof outer layer. Sessions might start out at one temperature but become much cooler or warmer as they progress. Closed-toed, boot-typed shoes are required as well.
